The Mermaid Inn

Address: Rye Village, East Sussex, England

Originally, dating from 1156, the Mermaid was rebuilt, much as it still stands today, as the principal Inn of Rye. Now owned by two local residents the Mermaid caters for those who appreciate tradition and charm, coupled with the modern facilities required by today's guest.

So, from a picturesque cobbled street; step back in time to experience the unique atmosphere of one of England's oldest and loveliest Inns.

The Mermaid Inn is said to be the most haunted pub in England, with a history of duelling ghouls in the main bar, and several other spectres that haunt the inn bedrooms. The inn serves excellent food, and has a genuine fire in the bar.

Over the years the Mermaid has been visited by artistes of stage and screen, musicians, politicians of the day and royalty, including HRH Elizabeth, the late Queen Mother, HRH Prince Edward, Warren Beatty, Charlie Chaplin, Pierce Brosnan, Andy Garcia and even Johnny Depp.

Painters from all over the world have spent many a happy hour with brush in hand, capturing the rare character of this beautiful Inn.
